My review of The Elephant Man

"The Elephant Man" is a great movie with a lot of meaning behind it. The most fascinating part of the movie is learning that it is based on a true story. Although the movie was made in black and white it is still a great movie at the time it released, the black and white itself suits the movie. I find that John Hurt really portrayed John Merrick's character in a highly realistic way, after hours of make-up he really was John Merrick not John Hurt. I feel that as a person everyone who has watched this movie cant finish it and find Merrick a hideous freak, but instead the movie makes you see him as what he is, a human being. It teaches us the life lesson of not judging someone for their looks but for the content of their character. The movie makes you see who the real freaks are, it is not Merrick but the people that see him as a freak are the real freaks. The movie shows us the evil in humanity when we see something different, in a way it tells us how we cant accept differences between us, we discriminate. I feel the movie is a great complex movie to watch, and highly recommended.

  1. “…he really was John Merrick and not John Hurt.” Nailed it. That’s what great acting is. I’m glad you understood the message of the movie and its complexities. Well said!
